Bob Kaufmann 1921-2010

Hi Everyone,

Bob passed away on 12/22/2010 after a long bout with cancer.  As many of you know, he suffered a big heart attack three years ago, and the time he had after that was as wonderful as it was unexpected.  One of the things he did with this time was to self-publish a collection of his writings.  For those that are interested, the book's website is http://www.whatifpublishing.com/.

Over the next two weeks, I'll try and post some of dad's pictures, and other stuff I stumble upon while helping to organize his files.  One thing we'd all appreciate is if you could respond (either in e-mail to lovelyarelene --at-- gmail.com or as a reply to this post) with your memories, thoughts, indignant responses to his various incendiary posts, etc.

Thanks,

(Son) Richard (rskaufmann --at-- gmail.com)

Thursday, March 4 at 1PM (PST) on HLN (Headline News).

“Tiger Woods has been seen practicing his golf swing.  He has been focusing on his putts.”

All that time in rehab – wasted!

 ++++

Along with this came the report that the Republicans are furious that the Democrats are going  “to jam through” a vote and pass the huge Health Insurance Reform bill, insisting that the American public will throw out all the Democrats in the next election.

Hmmm.  I thought that was what they wanted.

++++++++++++

And another thing --

It is curious that the Republicans insist that deciding anything important by a simple majority in the 100 member Senate is un-American, while they do not seem to mind the fact that the greatest, longest-lasting decisions, including one changing the constitution, have been decided in court by a 5 to 4 simple majority in their favor.

+++++

A probe by the ethics committee in the House of Representatives forced Democratic representative Charlie Rangel to “take temporary leave” from his post as chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee.

Taking “temporary leave” sounds like an update of the old newsreel films’ comforting advice on what to do when a nuclear bomb explodes – Duck and Cover – and is probably just as effective.

+++++

Given the wide scope and low level of ethics in Congress, the only fair way the Ethics Committee can single out its targets is by lottery.

Congress is a place where everything has either the earmarks of a cover-up, or a cover-up of earmarks.

+++

Here’s how to solve the economic mess.  Take a tip from the private sector.  Every time Halliburton screws up, they change their name.  That leaves their original name available.  Congress should change its name to Halliburton, dig into their old books, and recover enough wheelbarrows full of cash to pay most of the cost of our last couple of wars.Then they can change their name to Goldman-Sachs, skip through the hedges, and pay off the entire national debt.

Finally, they can ride off into the sunset over Alaska’s Bridge to Nowhere in their Oldsmobile – or Pontiac, or in a Toyota.

+++++++

Then, of course, there is Plan B.

Have Halliburton declare war on some other country, and we have our country provide services for them, and steal them blind.

++++

It has not gone unnoticed that politicians who make a big deal of putting flags on their lapels to prove their patriotism rarely have any of their children or grandchildren killed in our wars.

++++++

Here is a crazy reason we don’t end the stupid wars we are fighting and bring our troops home.  They could create one god-awful noise if we brought a couple of hundred thousand of them home where there were no jobs for them.

The Republicans are far ahead of the Democrats on this one.  They will probably hire them all to act as personal militias to protect them from other venal characters trying to break in to their gated communities.
