When in1965, Ralph Nader published “Unsafe At Any Speed,” his scathing report on the American automobile industry, and particularly the Corvair, General Motors revved up their engines and attempted to smash him.
Boasting that, “As GM goes, so goes the nation,” and acting like a 1966 8-cylinder, smog-belching Goliath, they roared at this skinny David-like Nader, hounded and harassed him, until he really dented their fenders.
They courted disaster and found disaster in the courts.
The money he won from them in a lawsuit funded what became Nader’s Raiders.
Now, a half century later, Ralph still roams the land, and GM is headed for the junk bond yard.
Yup, as GM goes, all you can hear is a thing that goes bump in the night, and the screeching of brakes that don't work as their brilliant bosses drive straight for the cliff, clutching their golden parachutes.
